We Must Protect the On-Demand

imageThe safety of Canadian drinking water first crossed our collective minds and made international press in 2000, when Walkerton, Ontario residents became violently ill from contaminated water. After all the dust had settled, seven were dead and hundreds more were sick as a result of improper waste disposal from local dairy farms and lax oversight. Almost half of the 5, 000 people in the small town were sickened by the contaminated water. During the height of the scare, thousands of liters of bottled water were shipped in, so residents could cook, clean, and bathe.

While some may hope that it was a one-time tragedy, tainted water is a recurring problem in many parts of the country. The First Nations community of Attawapiskat has made international headlines on numerous occasions due to the contaminated water that surrounds the remote community.

“The combination of improper sanitation and bad water quality can lead to a number of health problems, including skin rashes and infections, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal illnesses, ” wrote CBC reporter Kazi Sastina. “It also means infections take longer to heal and infectious diseases spread more easily.”

Contaminated water isn’t only a concern for those in small towns and remote communities, it is a growing concern for all Canadians. After all, we all require water to live.

In January of 2015, there was a reported 1, 838 water advisories in effect across the country. 1, 669 were in counties or cities for which the province is responsible for the water supply. The other 139 were in First Nations communities that fall under federal jurisdiction. In total, there were more than 500 advisories in British Columbia alone

How can Canadians ensure they are providing their families with clean and healthy drinking water?

Whole home water filtration systems are the best way to assure that the water that comes out of your home’s faucets are safe for consumption. There are approximately 2, 100 known water pollutants. Federal governments in Canada and the United States can only screen for 90 of those. That means there are hundreds of pollutants that may be in our water supply without our knowledge.

One of those companies is Secure Home Services, an Ontario-based residential heating and cooling system supplier, that also offers whole home water filtration systems. “Many people don’t realize that contaminants can make their way into our bodies not only from drinking water, but also from inhalation and dermal absorption, ” adds Secure Home Services representative, Ali Mohammad.

Aside from filtering out the 2, 100 water contaminants, a whole home water filtration system can also make your hair and skinny healthier, as well as make your coffee and tea taste better, as Secure Home Services’ Ali Mohammad points out.
